This coming Monday, the unambiguously non-extinct Dodos are going to be flying their way to Capitol Hill for a show at Neumos (here I would normally apologize for an entire sentence  fueled by puns, but since we’re talking birds, I am totally unapologetic). The Dodos are out of San Francisco and just released their fourth album, No Color, last month. Doors open at 8, so you’re probably well off arriving by 9 to catch the openers, Philadelphia’s Reading Rainbow

Why Everyone Else is a HypocriteThese past couple of weeks, Seattle has seen a small downturn in particularly notable musical performances. We’ll be seeing a lot more bands coming through Seattle in April, but this month has definitely seen a rise in stimulating, shouldn’t-be-missed events at Town Hall, the community cultural beacon on a hill – First Hill. On Thursday, March 31, evolutionary psychologist Robert Kurzban will be discussing his new book, Why Everyone (Else) is a Hypocrite.

This coming Monday, This American Life contributor Sarah Vowell will be speaking at Town Hall about her new book, “Unfamiliar Fishes,” which discusses the history of American imperialism in a new light. While we all know we acquired Hawaii sometime in later U.S. history, it’s not always evident in historical descriptions how this came to be. It was a more cruel and bitter process than a lot of people know, and thankfully Vowell has a lot to say about it.

Do you like acrobats? Can can dancers? Casinos? Starting tomorrow, the Triple Door will be putting on its 4th-annual cabaret/variety show for three nights through Saturday. The theme of the show is an interesting and odd blend of Las Vegas sensationalism with the quaint and quirky film we’re all so familiar with, The Wizard of Oz.

Persian New Year Celebration @ Town Hall

Have you ever been to a Persian New Year’s Celebration? The Persian culture is far more than food, rugs, and hookahs, and tonight at Town Hall you can check out what the Persian New Year is all about. Named “Nowruz,” or “new day,” it’s a day that is much like the Western New Year and takes place around the Spring Equinox (yes, Spring is starting to come to Seattle!).
Tonight’s event celebrates the most important holiday in the Zoroastrian calendar, a religiously-based calendar that was followed by Iranians/Persians for centuries. There will be …

Coen Brothers Double Feature at Central Cinema

Oh, that George Clooney. Whenever he’s around the multiple Academy Award nominated Coen Brothers, he just gets so silly! Not to mention Nicholas Cage and, particularly, John Goodman. This Friday – Sunday, March 18 to March 20, Central Cinema will be showing a double feature of “O Brother, Where Art Thou” and “Raising Arizona,” two very, very funny films.
You’ve probably heard about Central Cinema before – it’s a fun place to go for a movie and you can eat and drink while you’re watching!  There aren’t many pub theaters …

SIFF Marathon of “The Kingdom” Event This Sunday

The 1994 Danish TV show “The Kingdom,” otherwise known as “Ringet,” has been described as a Z-grade horror film, a starkly black comedy, and a directorial sequel to “Twin Peaks.” Never heard of it? Well, now’s your chance! SIFF Cinema in Seattle Center will be showing a marathon of the entire  single-season series this Sunday, March 13. It’s only going to set you back $20, and it’s going to be awesome!
The series is described as being set in the neurosurgical ward of Copenhagen’s Rigshospitalet, the city and country’s main hospital, nicknamed “Riget”. The …

The Contest: Seinfeld Trivia at Blue Star Pub Tonight

Do you know why Kramer was temporarily turned into a turkey? What tastes like a chicken bone – cigarettes or cigars? What type of liquor can you drink without even smelling? What type of salad causes George grief? If you know the answers to these critical and necessary questions, you probably need to watch less TV. More importantly, you definitely need to enter The Contest, the wonderful Seinfeld contest taking place at Wallingford’s Blue Star Cafe and Pub. It’s organized by Geeks who Drink, the fantastic organizers of many-a-trivia night …

Oscar Party at the Central Cinema Tonight

There have been a slew of great films this year, and tonight at the Central Cinema, you can celebrate them all with great food and, even greater, adult beverages – all while watching the 83rd annual Academy Awards! This years’ best pictures include Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, The Kids Are All Right, The King’s Speech, 127 Hours, The Social Network, Toy Story 3, True Grit, and Winter’s Bone (phew!). That’s right – there are now 10 nominees each year instead of 5, so it’s incredibly unlikely that you’ve seen them all. …

The Lonely Forest, Oregon Donor, Violins at Vera Project March 3

You’ve probably heard them on KEXP if you haven’t heard them elsewhere, as they’ve been playing in Seattle for years now. The Lonely Forest hail from our very own Anacortes, Washington, nestled in the San Juan Islands. They are currently signed to Death Cabber Chris Walla’s Trans Records, and it’s no surprise – their cleanly produced songs and reverberating piano riffs definitely suggest Death Cab for Cutie’s most recent couple of albums. In 2006, they won the battle of the bands at Seattle’s Experience Music Project’s Sound Off! contest, thrusting …
